Investor and dedicated historic preservationist Mr. Robert (Bob) Wilson passed away on Monday in Manhattan's Upper West Side. A member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation since 1966, Wilson was both a supporter and leader of the preservation movement.

A generous philanthropist, he is known for establishing innovative challenge grant gifts linked to matching donations, which helped ensure financial security for many organizations, the National Trust among them. The following is a statement from Stephanie Meeks, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation:

“The National Trust for Historic Preservation mourns the passing of preservation champion Robert Wilson. His incredible legacy as a business leader and philanthropist is well known to preservationists. His challenge grant program, which has spanned more than a decade, helped accelerate the preservation movement’s growth and sophistication in a way that will benefit historic places and communities for generations to come.

“Bob’s dedication to preserving architectural and cultural heritage sites inspired us all. His accomplishments and generosity were recently recognized at the National Preservation Conference in Buffalo in 2011 with the Louise duPont Crowninshield Award, preservation’s highest honor. His passing is a loss deeply felt by the entire preservation community, and we will remain forever grateful for his many contributions, which have created a rich and lasting legacy.”
