The National Trust for Historic Preservation is now accepting nominations for our 2014 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places -- and we need your help. Over the past 26 years, the National Trust’s list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places has been instrumental in helping to sound the alarm, and help save, hundreds of America’s most important, threatened places.
You can help us raise national awareness of a beloved threatened place in your area -- and generate local support for protecting it – by nominating it to the 2014 11 Most list. Many places named to the list in recent years are already on the path to preservation, including:
- Ohio’s Village of Zoar, listed in 2012. Just last month, the greatest threat to the Village of Zoar was removed when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it is no longer considering removal of the levee that protects the town. The decision reflects the Army Corps’ appreciation of Zoar’s historic and cultural importance, and came after the Corps received over 2,000 comments in support of saving Zoar from people across the country and the world -- many of which were sent by National Trust members and supporters.
- Milwaukee VA Soldiers Home, listed in 2011. With several buildings on the Milwaukee VA Soldiers Home campus dating to just after the Civil War, the campus is an iconic historic place that has served generations of American service men and women. Since it was named to the 11 Most list, the Veterans Administration in Milwaukee has undertaken several repairs on the Soldiers Home campus, including extensive roof repairs to two of the most significant buildings -- Old Main and the Ward Memorial Theater. Thanks to these efforts, there is now an opportunity to preserve these buildings for generations to come, while honoring the buildings’ original intent: to provide much-needed services to veterans.
If you know of an important local site that would benefit from major national attention, now is the time to take action. The deadline for nominating a site to the list is March 3, 2014. Additional information and the full nomination form are available at PreservationNation.org/11most.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to let us know about the threatened historic place that your community can’t afford to lose. Good luck!
